A marriage made in heaven?

An amazing offer of generosity from our Methodist friends. The following article appeared in the Bible Society's weekly email news digest 'Newswatch, on 13 February.

The Methodist church is ‘ready to go out of existence … for the sake of mission’. Revd David Gamble, president of the Methodist Conference, made the announcement as he offered the prospect of a merger with the Church of England. Speaking to the Anglican General Synod, he said the 265,000-member denomination was ready to ‘cease having a separate existence as a church if that will serve the needs of the Kingdom’. Mr Gamble said both churches ‘are growing rapidly’ in other parts of the world but while ‘struggling to cohere’ in the UK, they ‘have things to offer each other’. A covenant made by both churches in 2003 was intended to pave the way to full unity.

This calls for an equally generous response from the Anglicans. I do hope that we are able to respond positively and not put any meaningless barriers in the way of achieving full unity.
